Because of her faith, it seems odd that Betsy Devos would stand next to a foul-mouthed rapper, but that event did happen, and it was recorded on Twitter. The two came together to share their experiences surrounding charter schools.
At that particular meeting, Betsy DeVos was still the secretary of education, and she was not shy about letting America know her position on school choice. She has been a proponent of alternative education since her kids were in elementary school. They are adults today.
School choice gives parents the option to send their kids to another learning institution other than the ones the state provides. There is much controversy surrounding this subject because some people believe it takes funding out of the federal system. Others think it is a way to open up educational opportunities to families that want to send their children to faith-based or private entities.
The rap musician opened up a charter school called SLAM in Florida. He partnered with others that were interested in developing an art-centered high school. Leaders in Florida have not all been supportive of this rapper’s venture into education because of the type of music he sings and the words he uses.
Betsy DeVos did not seem to be offended by his style. The two appeared to get along on stage. With one thing in common, two very different people can put aside apparent disagreements and highlight the one thing they both cherish, which, in this case, is alternative schools.
From the outside, she may appear steadfast on her stance, but seeing her stand on the stage with the famous musician showed her soft side and her ability to tolerate people who are not just duplicates of herself.
